We are contacting you as we hope that you would be able to assist us in achieving our fundraising goals and in supporting others who are less well-off than ourselves; but firstly let me give you some information on our upcoming trip.
On the 16th of May 2025, 13 students and 4 teachers from our school will be travelling to Zambia. The first week of our trip will be spent in a small town in the west called Limalunga. Sr Peggy (who grew up in Kilcloon, Co. Meath) runs a pre-school there. Many of the children are orphans who are cared for by their grandparents or older siblings. They get breakfast before school and lunch before they go home. This year’s fundraiser is to go towards building a brick kitchen for Sr Peggy’s pre-school. The kitchen they currently use is small and made of wood and straw but as the school expands the need for a good-sized kitchen is now necessary.
Not far from Limalungu is a bigger town called Mongu and there’s a home for disabled children there called the Cheshire Home. It was set up by the Presentation Sisters and it’s located in the grounds of their convent. We’ll be working alongside Sr Cathy here, she is an Irish nun from Portlaoise. The children live in the Cheshire Home and they are educated and cared for; physiotherapy sessions are provided and children are brought to the local hospital for operations to help them to walk or stand.
The students and teachers who will be travelling out to Zambia in less than 2 weeks time will be bringing clothes, school uniforms, pens, pencils, copies, laptops and much more with us. We will distribute these to the people of Mongu, Limulunga and another place in the southern province called Pemba where we’ll be meeting an Irish priest, Fr Michael Walsh from Offaly. Fr Michael is expanding his school and he has asked us if we could support the construction of 2 science laboratories for his school.
This is the other part of our fundraising goal – the construction of 2 science laboratories for this school in Pemba.
The students and teachers of Coláiste Chiaráin, and the community in Limulunga and Pemba would be extremely appreciative for any help you could give to assist us in achieving these initiatives (Sr Peggy’s Kitchen and Fr Michael’s Science Laboratories).
